JUST A REMINDER... MARK ZUCKERBERG'S COMPANY MAKES ROUGHLY $668 MILLION A DAY.
And you're paying your marketing team to create content for his platforms.
Think about that for a minute.
You pay the salaries. You hire the photographers. You buy the cameras. You edit the videos. You design the graphics. You write the captions. You schedule the posts.
And where does all that hard work go?
Facebook. Instagram. LinkedIn. TikTok. YouTube.
Platforms you don't own. Algorithms you don't control. Audiences you may have to pay to reach again tomorrow.
I THINK MARKETERS HAVE GOTTEN SOCIAL MEDIA FUNDAMENTALLY WRONG.
Somewhere along the way, we started treating social media as the destination.
Marketing departments spend enormous amounts of time, money, and resources creating content specifically to keep these platforms interesting.
They're measuring impressions, likes, followers, engagement rates, and video views.
They're hiring social media managers, content creators, videographers, editors, graphic designers, and entire teams dedicated to feeding the algorithms.
But here's what bothers me.
SOCIAL MEDIA WAS ALWAYS SUPPOSED TO BE THE START OF THE FUNNEL. NOT THE ENTIRE FUNNEL.
The purpose was to attract attention, introduce people to your business, and bring them into an environment where you could build a relationship.
Your website. Your business. Your customer community. Your owned media.
Somewhere along the way, the funnel became the destination.
And the destination became someone else's business.
Now, I'm not suggesting social media doesn't work. It absolutely does.
But there's a difference between using social media to grow your business and using your business to grow social media.
ONE BUILDS YOUR ASSETS. THE OTHER BUILDS THEIRS.
And this is where I think business owners need to rethink their entire marketing strategy.
What if your customers were your content creators?
What if your community became your distribution network?
What if you stopped asking your marketing team to come up with another 30 posts about your products, features, benefits, and accomplishments?
And instead asked:
WHO IN OUR COMMUNITY DESERVES THE SPOTLIGHT TODAY?
Think about the people surrounding your business.
Your customers have stories.
Your employees have expertise.
Your vendors have businesses.
Your partners have accomplishments.
Your industry has thought leaders.
Your community has entrepreneurs, innovators, and people doing extraordinary things.
Every one of them has something interesting to share.
And every one of them has a network of people who might be interested in hearing it.
SO WHY AREN'T THEY THE CENTER OF YOUR MARKETING?
That's the philosophy behind customer-centric marketing.
And it's why I founded AmpLever.com
We license user-generated content digital magazines that allow businesses, associations, trade shows, franchises, real estate agents, influencers, and communities to become their own media companies.
Not another social media account.
Not another content calendar.
YOUR OWN DIGITAL PUBLICATION.
Imagine you're a real estate agent.
Instead of spending your afternoon filming another video about why someone should list their house with you, you invite the local bakery owner to be featured in your community magazine.
They tell their story.
Their article gets published.
They proudly share it with their customers, friends, family, and social networks.
Those people discover your publication. They read the bakery owner's story. They discover another local business. They share another article.
And suddenly, your marketing isn't just about you anymore.
YOU'VE GIVEN YOUR ENTIRE COMMUNITY A REASON TO MARKET WITH YOU.
Now imagine you're a trade show organizer.
You have hundreds of exhibitors, sponsors, speakers, and industry experts attending your event.
Instead of spending the entire year promoting a three-day event, you operate an industry publication that features those people all year long.
Every featured exhibitor has a reason to share their story.
Every speaker can extend their thought leadership beyond the stage.
Every sponsor can gain additional visibility.
And your event becomes more than a date on the calendar.
It becomes an ongoing media destination for your industry.
HERE'S WHY THIS WORKS DIFFERENTLY.
Traditional marketing generally starts with your business creating content and hoping people pay attention.
Customer-centric media starts with the people who already have a relationship with your business.
When you feature someone, you're giving them something valuable: recognition, credibility, visibility, and a professional story they can proudly share.
Their network has a personal reason to engage because the story is about someone they know.
Some of those readers discover other articles, other businesses, and other contributors.
And every new participant can introduce another network.
One story becomes another opportunity for discovery.
Another contributor introduces another audience.
Another audience introduces another potential customer, partner, or contributor.
THAT'S COMPOUNDING VIEWERSHIP.
And unlike a social media post that may disappear from someone's feed within hours, a published article becomes a reusable media asset.
It can be searched, shared, referenced, linked to, and discovered again.
You're not simply renting attention.
You're building a library of stories, relationships, and intellectual property around your business.
BUT HERE'S THE PART I THINK BUSINESS OWNERS WILL FIND MOST INTERESTING.
You don't need to hire an editorial department.
You don't need a newsroom.
You don't need to personally interview everyone.
And you don't need to spend your entire day creating content.
At AmpLever, we've automated the contributor experience.
You invite someone to get featured. They choose the questions they want to answer, submit their story, publish their article, and share it with their network.
Our digital magazine model is designed to take less than 20 minutes a day to operate.
And getting started doesn't require months of development.
With our Vend-O-Matic licensing program, we can launch your branded digital magazine in approximately 5–7 business days once the necessary setup requirements are completed.
Your publication can feature your customers, community, industry experts, partners, and network.
It can also create opportunities for sponsorships, advertising, premium features, memberships, events, and other revenue streams.
So instead of marketing being nothing more than an expense, your owned media platform has the potential to become a revenue-generating business asset.
Now think about that for a minute.
You could spend the next year paying your marketing team to create more content for Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
Or you could spend the next year building a media property your business actually owns.
AND YOU CAN STILL USE SOCIAL MEDIA!
In fact, I encourage it.
Publish your articles on your own platform.
Then use Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, and other channels to introduce people to those stories.
Let your featured contributors share their articles.
Let their networks discover your publication.
Let social media do what it was always supposed to do.
BRING PEOPLE INTO YOUR FUNNEL.
Don't confuse the funnel with the destination.
Don't confuse followers with ownership.
And don't confuse posting more content with building more business value.
Mark Zuckerberg has built an extraordinary business by giving people a place to create, connect, and share.
Maybe it's time we learned something from that.
STOP TRYING TO BE THE ONLY PERSON CREATING CONTENT FOR YOUR BUSINESS.
Give your customers a platform.
Give your community a voice.
Give your network a reason to participate.
And build something that belongs to you.
That's customer-centric marketing.
That's owned media.
THAT'S AMPLEVER.com
