Bulky Resale Without the Stranger Meetup
E-COMMERCE
Thank you for taking the time to sit with us today. To help our readers get to know you a little better, could you introduce yourself, tell us about your role within the organization, and share a little about the business, community, or mission that you spend your days helping to build?
I'm Ari Kimmelfeld, founder of Commonplace. We built a managed marketplace for bulky secondhand furniture, fitness gear, saunas, and appliances. We inspect the item, white-glove deliver it, take $1 down, and the buyer pays after they test it at home.
Many of our readers are entrepreneurs, operators, and builders themselves, so origin stories tend to resonate deeply with them. Can you share the story of how your company got started and the problem you originally set out to solve?
Bulky resale still runs on Facebook Marketplace stranger meetups. A sofa, a home gym, a sauna, or a washer is hard to trust and hard to move. I started Commonplace so those items could change hands without that meetup.
Every industry has competition, and every successful organization eventually discovers what makes it uniquely valuable. From your perspective, what makes your business different from others in your space, and why do customers continue choosing you over alternatives?
We own the hard parts. We inspect the item, then white-glove deliver it. The buyer puts $1 down and pays only after they test it at home. That is why people pick us instead of a listing and a meetup.
Every industry has misconceptions, and every business has stories that people rarely get to hear. What's something most people misunderstand about your business, your industry, or the work that goes into delivering the products and services you provide?
People think used bulky goods have to be a curb pickup or a stranger in the living room. They don't. The item can be inspected, delivered, and paid for only after the buyer has tested it.

You've had a front-row seat to changes happening within your industry, and we'd love to hear your perspective. What trends, technologies, or shifts are you paying closest attention to right now, and where do you believe things are heading over the next few years?
Buyers want secondhand when it feels as safe as a normal purchase. Informal apps still leave the risk on the buyer. This category is moving toward managed marketplaces that handle inspection, delivery, and payment.
Is there a belief you hold strongly about your industry that may differ from conventional wisdom or the way many others approach the market today?
Most marketplaces take the money first and hope the item is fine. I don't. The buyer should put $1 down and pay after they test it at home. If they have to guess whether the sofa or the sauna works, the marketplace failed them.
Many of our readers are entrepreneurs, professionals, and business leaders themselves. Based on your experiences, what advice would you offer someone hoping to build a successful career or business within your industry?
Start with a problem people already hate, then do the unglamorous work. For us that is inspection, delivery, and payment terms. A nicer listing does not help if the handoff still feels like a stranger meetup.
Thank you so much for joining us today to share your insights and experiences with our audience. If someone reading this interview wants to support your business or learn more about what you're building, where should we send them?
